Some defective products may pose fire hazardsFire extinguishers are one of the most important objects found in buildings across the country. People residing in homes, apartment complexes, businesses and other structures depend on these devices during fires. Without a functioning fire extinguisher, you and your loved ones could be at risk of severe injury or death. Your property and your belongings could be at risk of being destroyed.

Kidde is a major producer of fire extinguishers in the US. The company recently announced a recall for 37.8 million fire extinguishers that may fail during an emergency. Some of the 137 Kidde fire extinguishers affected by the recall were manufactured as far back as 1973.

According to Kidde, these fire extinguishers may become clogged or fail to discharge during fires. Nozzles used on these fire extinguishers can also come detached with enough force to cause impact injuries. Kidde has received reports of one death and 16 injuries involving the recalled fire extinguishers. In addition, the company is aware of 91 instances of property damage and 391 cases where the fire extinguishers failed to work.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has instructed consumers to return the recalled fire extinguishers to Kidde for a replacement. You can check if your fire extinguisher is affected by visiting the CPSC’s website, which contains a list of the recalled models.
