Are There Safety Measures to Prevent People from Falling Off Escalators?

Recently, an escalator accident at the World Trade Center’s Oculus claimed the life of a 29-year-old New Jersey woman. Per NJ.com, the woman, who was a resident of Hudson County, fell off the escalator as she attempted to grab a hat her twin sister had dropped. After falling over the side of the escalator, she fell to the main concourse. The 29-year-old woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, where she was later pronounced dead. Could Businesses Be Doing More to Prevent Escalator Accidents?

The Press of Atlantic City recently featured a story about an escalator accident that involved a 7-year-old boy getting his foot stuck in an escalator at a shopping mall. Per the report, while riding the escalator, one of the boy’s feet was dragged into the gap between the edge of the escalator and the step he was standing on. As the escalator continued to move down, the boy’s foot was trapped. The injuries to boy’s foot were so severe that doctors were forced to amputate the toes on the foot. As of this writing, his family has filed a premises lawsuit against the mall and the escalator manufacturer. The suit claims the incident and the boy’s injuries are the result of the mall and manufacturer of failing to properly repair and maintain the escalator.
